The SAC Social Anthropology Research Group celebrated the launch of two seminal new books by Judith Bovensiepen and Andrew Sanchez, on Tuesday evening February 16th. The evening opened with a grand welcome by our eloquent and witty Head of School, Richard Griffiths, followed by an introduction to Judith’s an Andrew’s books by Academic Head, Daniela Peluso, who expressively captured the importance of these books for the discipline of social anthropology.

We sat back, many of us on the floor, to listen to Judith’s spellbinding reading of an excerpt from her book, The Land of Gold: Post-Conflict Recovery and Cultural Revival in Independent Timor-Leste (Cornell: SEAP) followed by Andrew’s riveting reading from Criminal Capital: Violence, Corruption and Class in Industrial India (Routledge). After both a fun-filled and serious Q&A we enjoyed a wine and cheese soiree accompanied by music from Judith and Andrew’s respective field sites. It was lovely to share this occasion across the school with friends, colleagues and students!
